Gordon Milne's contribution to the rise of Liverpool in the 1960s cannot be overestimated.
He played in 282 league and cup matches for the Reds, scoring 18 times, and despite the disappointment of missing out on the 1965 FA Cup final due to injury, two championship medals were ample compensation for the skilful and reliable half-back.
Milne was signed from Preston North End in 1960 as Bill Shankly was setting about transforming the team and returning Liverpool to the top tier.
A vital figure on the right of midfield, he only missed one league fixture in three seasons as Liverpool won the Second Division title in 1961-62, established themselves in the First Division the next term and then won the league championship itself in 1963-64.
He started six ties on the Reds' run to the FA Cup final in 1965 but had to watch from the sidelines when the trophy was lifted for the first time at Wembley.
Milne was back in the season that followed, however, and helped Liverpool achieve another top-flight title at the end of the 1965-66 campaign.
An unselfish team player, he continued to figure frequently under Shankly until moving on to Blackpool in May 1967.
