Gary Gillespie had played six years at Coventry City, making around 200 appearances when his contract ran out in 1983. He had already had talks with Arsenal when he was informed Liverpool were interested in securing his services.
Joe Fagan's first signing as Reds boss had his work cut out for him to split up the successful Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen partnership in the centre of defence.
But Gillespie was a graceful centre-half and he accomplished his longest run in the side from 1986 to 1988, forcing Fagan's successor Kenny Dalglish to move Lawrenson to full-back to accommodate the Scotsman alongside compatriot Hansen.
Occasionally, the trio would form a central defensive unit.
Injuries restricted Gillespie's number of appearances from 1988 to 1990, but he played 35 matches in Dalglish's final season in 1990-91.
Gillespie left Liverpool to join his boyhood idols Celtic in 1991.
