Liverpool's signing of Fernando Morientes in January 2005 was considered something of a coup, given his stellar CV in the game, and hopes were high about the impact he could make.

The Spanish striker had spent the large part of his career at Real Madrid - with whom he won the Champions League three times - and had recently starred on loan for AS Monaco as they reached the 2004 final.

Morientes was never quite able to reproduce that kind of form while representing the Reds, though.

He was frustratingly cup-tied and ineligible to participate as Rafael Benitez led Liverpool to their stunning Champions League triumph that season, but did net three times in the Premier League to open his account.

Morientes was a regular name on the teamsheet in the next campaign, making 33 starts and 46 appearances overall as the Reds continued to progress under Benitez's guidance.

His strike-rate was relatively low, with the forward delivering nine goals in all competitions, though he played his part in the addition of two more honours to the trophy cabinet that term.

Having started the UEFA Super Cup final that saw Liverpool defeat CSKA Moscow, Morientes featured off the bench in the FA Cup showpiece with West Ham United as the Reds prevailed on penalties.

That summer, he left Merseyside to return to Spain, joining Valencia.
