Liverpool needed a tall striker up front and when Gerard Houllier was trying to build his own team, Erik Meijer seemed a sensible acquisition on a free transfer in July 1999.

<p>During his debut season, he made 21 appearances in the league and a further three in the League Cup, a competition that saw his only senior goals for the club, a brace at Hull City.</p><p>Only three more outings followed in 2000-01, all as a substitute, although he was on the bench for both legs of the UEFA Cup tie with Rapid Bucharest.</p><p>By the time that tie was played, it was clear the manager was going to look elsewhere for his back-up striker options.</p><p>He decided to return to mainland Europe and join Hamburg after being released by Liverpool in December 2000.</p><p>Meijer gained cult-hero status at Anfield, with <a href="https://www.liverpoolfc.com/info/jamie-carragher"><strong>Jamie Carragher</strong></a> saying of the Dutchman: "He was just a great fella to have around the place and a great fella to have on the pitch when he did play, a real team player who'd really put himself about.</p><p>"He was just unfortunate at the time that we had so many good strikers and he was probably No.4 choice before he got the chance to move on."</p>
