El Hadji Diouf was signed for Liverpool by Gerard Houllier after starring in the 2002 World Cup for Senegal.
The fiery forward started out at Sochaux in 1998 and then moved to Rennes a year later. His stay was short there as well and Lens was his next destination.
After 18 goals in 54 league games for Lens and almost winning the title in his final season, he accepted Houllier's offer, with the Reds boss choosing to recruit him instead of Nicolas Anelka that summer.
Diouf failed to score regularly enough for Liverpool, though, and joined Bolton Wanderers on loan in 2004-05.
He scored nine league goals for them and that led to him joining Bolton permanently in the summer of 2005.
