David Thompson came through the youth ranks in the 1990s to make more than a half-century of appearances for Liverpool.

<p>The attack-minded midfielder from Birkenhead was part of the Reds' FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 1996.</p><p>Thompson made his senior debut for the club in August of the same year, appearing as a late substitute when Arsenal were beaten 2-0 at Anfield.</p><p>Six more games and one goal followed across the remainder of that season and 1997-98 - which also included a loan spell at Swindon Town - before Thompson began to feature more frequently for Liverpool.</p><p>Appreciated by supporters for his committed attitude, he racked up 49 outings from 1998 to 2000 as Gerard Houllier took over the managerial reins and began to mould the squad.</p><p>Disciplinary issues set Thompson back, however, and Houllier opted to sell him to Coventry City ahead of 2000-01.</p>
