David Thompson came through the youth ranks in the 1990s to make more than a half-century of appearances for Liverpool.

The attack-minded midfielder from Birkenhead was part of the Reds' FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 1996.

Thompson made his senior debut for the club in August of the same year, appearing as a late substitute when Arsenal were beaten 2-0 at Anfield.

Six more games and one goal followed across the remainder of that season and 1997-98 - which also included a loan spell at Swindon Town - before Thompson began to feature more frequently for Liverpool.

Appreciated by supporters for his committed attitude, he racked up 49 outings from 1998 to 2000 as Gerard Houllier took over the managerial reins and began to mould the squad.

Disciplinary issues set Thompson back, however, and Houllier opted to sell him to Coventry City ahead of 2000-01.
