Liverpool-born defender Dave Rylands signed professional forms for the club in March 1970 when he was 17 years old.
He struggled to force his way into the first-team picture as Bill Shankly continued his rebuilding process in the wake of the club's FA Cup defeat at Watford in February 1970, after which the great manager knew he could no longer rely on the players who had brought the club so much success in the middle of the 1960s.
Shankly chose Rylands instead of the injured Larry Lloyd when Doncaster Rovers (bottom of the old Fourth Division at the time) arrived at Anfield for an FA Cup third-round tie on January 5, 1974.
Only two goals from Doncaster-born Kevin Keegan saved the day and by the time the Reds travelled to Yorkshire for the replay three days later, Lloyd had been restored to his place at the heart of the defence.
