A superb centre-forward in his day, Dave Hickson is one of the few players to have made the move from Everton to Liverpool.

He signed for the Toffees as an 18-year-old in 1948, scoring 71 goals in 151 games for the Blues from 1951 to 1955.

Everton were promoted to the First Division in 1954, but after only one season in the top flight, scoring 12 goals in 39 league games, he moved to Aston Villa.

He only stayed two months there before joining Huddersfield Town, where a certain Bill Shankly coached the reserves and took over as manager a year later in November 1956.

Hickson returned to Everton in July 1957, scoring a further 40 goals in 92 games.

The instinctive striker had a reputation as a courageous and no-nonsense player, and he certainly took a brave decision when he opted to make the move to Liverpool at the age of 30.

Reds manager Phil Taylor hoped Hickson would be the man whose goals would take the club back into the First Division.

But a month after signing for Liverpool, in December 1959, Hickson was again playing under Shankly. He scored 21 goals in 29 matches and 17 in 38 in his two seasons at Liverpool in Division Two.

Hickson and Roger Hunt were an effective partnership but Shankly brought in Ian St John in 1961 and that signalled the end of Hickson's Anfield adventure.
