Welsh striker Billy Matthews made his debut for Liverpool as a centre-half in a 3-0 win over Derby County on April 3, 1920.

"Big, burly and boisterous" Matthews played as a forward in his other eight appearances for the Reds.

He had to wait until December 1920 before being called up again, and that appearance at Burnley was his only one of the 1920-21 season.

After missing the opening fixture of the 1921-22 campaign, he was brought back for the next seven First Division matches, in which he scored four times.

But the home game with Chelsea on the first day of October 1921 proved to be his last for the club.
