Welsh striker Billy Matthews made his debut for Liverpool as a centre-half in a 3-0 win over Derby County on April 3, 1920.

<p>"Big, burly and boisterous" Matthews played as a forward in his other eight appearances for the Reds.</p><p>He had to wait until December 1920 before being called up again, and that appearance at Burnley was his only one of the 1920-21 season.</p><p>After missing the opening fixture of the 1921-22 campaign, he was brought back for the next seven First Division matches, in which he scored four times.</p><p>But the home game with Chelsea on the first day of October 1921 proved to be his last for the club.</p>
