Berry Nieuwenhuys, or 'Nivvy' as he was nicknamed by those who couldn't say his South African surname, was a skilful winger who could play on either flank.
He played for Liverpool mostly in the 1930s, although he did also have a brief second spell with the club after the Second World War.
His name was almost a permanent one on the teamsheet for six seasons and was also a regular on the scoresheet too; 79 goals in league and cup by the time his career ended in 1947 was a remarkable total for someone in his position.
Nieuwenhuys' speed and trickery confused many an opponent and he could also pack a fierce shot, something which contributed greatly to the number of goals he scored.
Finally, more than 13 years after he had originally been selected for the first team, he was able to taste some well-deserved success. He may not have been a regular in the team that won the league championship in 1947 but he did make enough appearances to qualify for a medal.
It was a fine and fitting end to the career of one of Liverpool's 'great entertainers'.
