Bernard Diomede was one of France's World Cup-winning heroes of 1998 and came to Liverpool with good credentials after eight years at Auxerre.

He enjoyed success in France, winning the league and cup double in 1996, but was keen for a fresh challenge and joined the Reds in the summer of 2000.

Diomede almost scored with a wonderful overhead kick against Sunderland in his early Anfield career, but the ball was judged not to have crossed the line – which, on replay, was shown to be a wrong decision.

He featured just four times in 2000-01, however, and then only once the next campaign. He was loaned out to Ajaccio in his final season and impressed them enough to snap him up when his contract at Liverpool expired.
