Scottish forward Andrew McCowie was at Liverpool for three seasons as the 20th century loomed.

He had made his name in Scotland with the very successful junior side Cambuslang Hibs before joining the Reds.

In 1896-97 - only Liverpool's fourth year as a Football League club - he played in the final two league fixtures of the season, against Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End.

Liverpool were consolidating their First Division status after their initial promotion to the top division had ended in immediate relegation.

McCowie managed six goals from 19 league games in 1897-98 as the Reds finished in ninth place, and his five goals in 12 matches the following season helped his team climb the table significantly to finish runners-up in the championship, just two points behind Aston Villa.

He moved on to Woolwich Arsenal in 1899.
