Alfred West was a tough-tackling full-back who represented Liverpool in the early part of the 20th century.
After signing from Barnsley in the autumn of 1903, he went straight into the first team and played in the remaining 24 First Division games of the 1903-04 season.
But despite helping to strengthen a defence that had leaked 13 goals in its five league fixtures, all lost, Liverpool were eventually relegated in 17th place, one point behind Stoke City.
West made 16 Second Division appearances the following season as the Reds bounced straight back into the top league, and then missed just a single game a year later as the club won its second First Division championship in 1906.
After a brief stint with Reading at the end of the decade, he returned to Anfield but only made four more league appearances for Liverpool before being transferred to Notts County.
