Liverpool-born England amateur international Albert Childs replaced regular right-back Ray Lambert for two consecutive First Division matches in the autumn of 1953.

He had markedly different experiences of league football during his only games for the club.

Childs' first match resulted in a 4-0 home win over Derby County when Louis Bimpson scored all four goals in the first half, whereas just seven days later the Reds were humiliated by six goals by Charlton Athletic at The Valley.
