Le joueur de 18 ans a vu ses débuts chez les Reds écourtés mardi soir à Anfield lors d'une victoire 2-1 en Carabao Cup contre Southampton.

Leoni a atterri maladroitement à la suite d'un défi sur la ligne de touche à la 81e minute du match et a eu besoin de l'aide du personnel médical pour quitter le terrain de jeu.

Slot a indiqué immédiatement après le match, en milieu de semaine, qu'il aurait besoin de tests supplémentaires pour obtenir un diagnostic complet du problème.

S'exprimant avant le déplacement de samedi en Premier League pour affronter Crystal Palace (coup d'envoi à 15 heures BST), le patron a maintenant donné plus d'informations sur sa blessure et on lui a également demandé si Federico Chiesa devrait désormais rejoindre son équipe de Ligue des champions en conséquence.

« Être si jeune, arriver dans un nouveau pays et jouer si bien dès son premier match... c'est très difficile de prendre le bon côté des choses. Il n'y a jamais de côté positif, mais il faut toujours essayer de voir le côté positif, à savoir qu'il est encore si jeune et qu'il lui reste encore tant d'années avant de se remettre d'une terrible blessure comme celle-ci. »

Slot was asked if will be useful for Leoni to have the support of teammates at Liverpool who have recovered from similar injuries and shown it is possible to return to the same level as before.

"I think that last thing definitely helps and we have some examples of that with Virgil [van Dijk] and Joe [Gomez], and there are a lot of examples all around the world," said the head coach.

"That's why I said the positive thing is that he is still 18, so he still has a lot of time to go. If you get an injury like that when you are close to your retirement it makes it much more difficult maybe. But in both situations it's far from ideal.

"I think the main and most important thing is the surgeons that are going to do the surgery, then second of all the ones that do the recovery, the rehab, with him.

"But then it's always nice if you can do this in a surrounding with players who have lived through this as well, they can give you the right energy maybe in certain moments.

"And I think our players already showed in the last two days a lot of compassion towards him and they will not stop doing that in the upcoming year."
