In der Folge gewann er zweimal den Ballon d'Or, als er das deutsche Team von Hamburg vertrat.
Seine Spielerkarriere umfasste auch Zeit bei Scunthorpe United, Southampton und Newcastle United.
Keegan wechselte später ins Management und leitete Newcastle (zweimal), Fulham, Manchester City und England.
