The table below displays the estimated weighted average carbon footprint of a recycled polyester (RP) jersey delivered to LFC's warehouses.
Methodology
LFC conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the medium-sized recycled polyester (RP) jersey, in accordance with ISO 14067 and the International EPD System Product Category Rules (PCR) 2019:07: T-Shirts, Tops, Singlets and Other Vests Product Category, to estimate the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of the jersey.
LFC recycled polyester jerseys are manufactured with 100% recycled polyester (RP) yarn, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. Waste plastic bottles are collected, cleaned and melted down to produce yarn for manufacturing. These jerseys are manufactured at LFC suppliers' production site in China and transported by barge to the club's UK and Netherlands warehouses. The main processes for the production of RP jersey are knitting, dyeing, cutting, sewing, assembling and packaging.
The data collected for the manufacturing of the RP jersey includes raw material consumption, process energy consumption, inbound and outbound transportation, and total processes output flows. The process data was calculated from a total of 11,156 LFCx1PointFive Istanbul jerseys manufactured during 2024.
Footprints for sizes other than medium were derived from the medium-sized assessment on the basis of garment weight. This extension across the full size range was reviewed by Bureau Veritas.
Contribution analysis
Raw Material Procurement: The largest source of the jersey's estimated carbon footprint is from the raw material procurement which makes up 57.54% of the estimated carbon footprint. The largest contributor within the raw material procurement stage to the total emissions calculation arises from the use of 100% recycled polyester (RP) yarn during the knitting process.
Manufacturing: Manufacturing stage is the second-largest source of carbon emissions for the jersey, making up 37.01% of the total calculation
- The dyeing process within manufacturing is the biggest contributor. This dyeing impact comes mainly from burning natural gas and the rest from electricity use.
- Knitting and the cutting, sewing and assembling of the jerseys also contributes significantly to the energy use during manufacturing due to the use of electricity.
- The natural gas combustion during the packaging process in the manufacturing stage results in minimal emissions, though as explained above it is significantly higher in the dyeing process.
Upstream Transportation: Transportation of all raw materials to the fabric mill and then to the jersey assembly factory accounts for 3.65% of the total emissions.
Downstream Transportation: Shipping the finished jerseys to the UK warehouse from China adds another 1.32% carbon emissions and shipping to the Netherlands' warehouse from China contributes 0.75% emissions.
Third party review
Based on data and documentation provided by LFC and its suppliers for the year 2024, Accenture modelled the LCA for the recycled polyester jersey processes covering the cradle-to-warehouse gate system boundary using the carbon management software CarbonSig, which LFC uses to track its products' emissions, in accordance with:
- ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse gases — Carbon footprint of products — Requirements and guidelines for quantification 14067
- The International EPD System Product Category Rules (PCR) 2019:07: T-Shirts, Tops, Singlets and Other Vests UN CPC 282. V1.0.3
Industrial Ecology Consultants reviewed and verified that Accenture's Product Carbon Footprint analysis of LFC's medium-sized Recycled Polyester (RP) Jersey for a cradle-to-warehouse gate life cycle boundary conforms with ISO 14067:2018.
A second critical review, by Bureau Veritas, focused on validating the findings of the previously conducted review, and the subsequent extension of the study to cover the full jersey size range (XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL), including assessment of the methodology, assumptions, data application and reporting used to derive the PCFs.
The carbon management software CarbonSig was used as recommended by LFC to support the development of the LCA model for the recycled polyester jersey processes, covering the cradle-to-warehouse gate system boundary.
Accenture did not perform additional review of the authenticity and accuracy of the data and documentation provided by LFC and its suppliers.
Credits
LFC has contracted with 1PointFive to purchase carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits to address the carbon footprint embedded within this jersey and will purchase the relevant quantity post-production.
Price
The LFC X 1PointFive commemorative jersey retails at the same price point of other LFC retro jerseys - RRP £55. After making emissions reductions in the supply chain, purchasing credits to remove the equivalent quantity of estimated CO2 from the atmosphere then less than $1 USD is added to the cost of the manufacturing of the jersey.
