Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is reportedly closing in on a return to action.

Gomez was signed from Charlton in the summer of 2015 for around £3.5million and made seven appearances at the start of last season.

But the 19-year-old tore his ACL on international duty last October has not played since.

He had been hoping to be fit for the start of the season but the defender suffered another injury setback with an Achilles tendon problem.

However the Liverpool Echo claim Gomez is now around a month away from making his return.

The report claims the youngster will finally resume training in October, but he will need a sustained spell of working outside at Melwood to show his fitness.

Liverpool’s reluctance to sign another defender during the summer transfer window was partly down to Gomez.

Jurgen Klopp apparently rates the defender highly and believes he has a long future at Anfield.
