Liverpool are weighing up a move for Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu, according to reports in France.

The 32-year-old joined the La Liga giants in a £16.7million deal from Valencia in 2014.

However, he may see his first team opportunities limited next season following the arrivals of Euro 2016 star Samuel Umtiti from Lyon and left back Lucas Digne from Paris Saint-Germain.

According to La Parisien, Jurgen Klopp is considering offering him a way out of the Nou Camp though.

The Liverpool boss has been forced back into the transfer market following Joe Gomez’s latest injury lay-off.

And his need for defensive cover has been further escalated by Martin Skrtel’s move to Fenerbahce, Mamadou Sakho’s achilles issues and Tiago Ilori’s call-up to Portugal’s Olympic Games squad.

Liverpool will face competition if they are interested in signing Mathieu though, with Paris-based journalist Florian Fischian reporting that Besiktas are also keen on the France international.

While Get French Football claim the Turkish giants have already launched a £5.9m move to take him to the Vodafone Arena.

Klopp has already made four additions to his squad this summer, in the form of Loris Karius, Joel Matip, Sadio Mane and Marko Grujic.
