Liverpool are interested in signing Schalke centre-back Joel Matip in the January transfer window, according to Sky sources.

Matip is out of contract at the end of the season but the Bundesliga side are desperate for him to sign a new deal.

The 6' 4" German-born Cameroon international fits the bill for Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp, who has had injury problems in his defence all season.

But if Klopp does want to pursue Matip, he may have a battle on his hands.

The Press Association says there are at least two French clubs ahead of Liverpool in the running for the 24-year-old.
