Liverpool were hoping to tie up a move for Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Grujic last night.

Anfield chief executive Ian Ayre travelled to Serbia to conclude a £5million deal for Grujic, 19, who would officially sign in January but then remain at Red Star for the rest of the season.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has taken a hands-on role in persuading Grujic to turn down interest from Inter Milan and Chelsea.
