Liverpool have joined rivals Everton in the race for Empoli star Riccardo Saponara, according to reports in Italy.

The playmaker only joined Empoli permanently in the summer after previously impressing during a six-month loan from Milan.

Since switching clubs the Italian has been in impressive form and it has led to scouts watching him in action.

Back in October both Everton and Juventus expressed an interest, forcing Empoli sporting director Marcello Carli to insist Saponara was not for sale.

However, according to Tuttosport, that has not stopped Liverpool and the Reds are now eyeing a January swoop.

New boss Jürgen Klopp is keen to add to his squad when the transfer window opens and reportedly sees the 23-year-old as an ideal addition.
