Liverpool are finally set to land Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi after the Spanish giants reportedly decided to offload the the 25-year-old.

The former Real Sociedad man has struggled during his two seasons at the Bernabeu and has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer.

Illarramendi was hopeful that Rafael Benitez’s appointment would signal a change in fortunes but the former Liverpool boss has made it clear to the midfielder that he’s seen as back-up to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

And, according to Spanish newspaper AS, Madrid have told the midfielder he’s free to leave the club this summer and they have an offer on the table from Brendan Rodgers’ side.
