Luis Suarez is targeting Copa America glory after helping Uruguay secure an 'historic' victory over hosts Argentina on Saturday night.

The Reds No.7 played an instrumental role as Oscar Tabarez's side claimed a 5-4 penalty shoot-out triumph to book a place in the last four after an entertaining game had ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ahead of the contest much had been made of the fact the encounter would be played on the same date on which the Uruguayan's upset Brazil in the 1950 World Cup final - and Suarez admits it was a motivating factor for him and his teammates.

Suarez said: "July 16 was a historic date, and we talked about it, and we also wanted to make history.

"It's an incredible moment. I believe we deserved it because in the first half 'the Russian' [Diego Perez] was sent off, and justice was served."

He continued: "We knew playing against the hosts was going to be difficult because we had all of the stadium against us, but we have to thank all of the fans and family who came to support us."

Uruguay will now face Peru in a semi-final showdown in La Plata on Tuesday evening.
