Steve McManaman believes Liverpool fans have every reason to be optimistic ahead of the new season and hopes to see Kenny Dalglish work his magic again.

The former Liverpool winger was encouraged by the Reds' strong showing in the second half of last season and expects the man who handed him his professional debut back in December 1990 to build on those strides.

"Like most Liverpool fans I think there's every reason to be optimistic," he told LFC Weekly magazine. "It's a full transfer window for Kenny and Damien Comolli to operate in and it's very exciting. The club has already brought in Jordan Henderson who, first and foremost, is young and English.

"But we also know that they are interested in many, many more players and that's great to see. Kenny's got a good history in the transfer market, so let's hope that he works his magic again.

"The fans should be encouraged by the way the team ended last season. I know they lost the last couple of games but overall they did a magnificent job after Kenny came back in.

"Everybody is as one now. Kenny got the job and instantly put the smile back on everybody's faces. The noises emanating from Melwood are all positive and everybody seems to be thrilled to bits with the appointment.

"When you take all these things into account, I think this could be a really good season for Liverpool."
