Jordan Henderson played the full 90 minutes as England came from behind to draw 1-1 with Spain in their opening game of the UEFA U21 European Championships in Denmark.

Danny Welbeck fired an equaliser from close range in the 88th minute to cancel out Ander Herrera's first half goal.

Lining up in the middle of the park, the Liverpool new boy was comfortable in possession and always wanted the ball.

The England No.8 also ended up with the captain's armband when Michael Mancienne was substituted after 67 minutes, and it proved to be a good omen as he helped his team clinch a favourable draw.

There was controversy surrounding the opening goal after 13 minutes when TV replays suggested Herrera touched the ball with his hand when he crept in at the back post to meet a corner.

Despite Spain having the best of the possession, England kept going and almost equalised in first half stoppage time but Bolton striker Daniel Sturridge saw his close range effort kept out by David de Gea.

Spain had opportunites to add a second goal after the break, but with time running out Welbeck got a the goal to give Stuart Pearce's side a draw in their opening game.

Former Liverpool centre back Mikel San Jose was on the bench for Spain.

In the other group game Czech Republic beat Ukraine 2-1. England play Ukraine next on Wednesday night.

Here are Henderson's best moments from the 90 minutes:

1 min: Gets stuck in with a good tackle in the middle of the park.

8 mins: Lovely pass into the box picks out Danny Welbeck, but the striker is crowded out by the Spanish defence.

11 mins: Makes a great run into the box, but the attempted left wing cross by Danny Rose is cut out for a corner.

26 mins: Great play from Henderson who plays a sweet one-two and Sturridge hits an effort which De Gea saves.

38 mins: Keeps possession well with a couple of nice passes.

43 mins: Switches ball out to the right to allow Kyle Walker to mount an attack down the wing.

54 mins: Good link-up in midfield, but as the new Liverpool man makes a darting run into the box the left wing cross from Ryan Bertrand is wayward and goes over the bar.

63 mins: Surging run into the Spain half to mount an attack.

67 mins: Handed the captain's armband when skipper Michael Mancienne is substituted.

75 mins: Another fine run into the box but left frustrated as Sturridge takes too long to cross and he is blocked out.
