Dirk Kuyt believes he is now part of a Liverpool set-up capable of challenging for the league title over the coming seasons.

The Dutchman was part of the side that took the title race to the penultimate weekend under Rafael Benitez in 2008-09.

Though the Reds were ultimately pipped by Manchester United, it was their best championship charge since clinching number 18 back in 1990.

Now, after a period of instability in L4, Kuyt thinks Liverpool are back on track to challenge for major honours under Kenny Dalglish and new owners Fenway Sports Group.

"I signed up (to a new contract) because I have faith in the club," Kuyt is reported as saying.

"Everything I noticed shows the ambitions are high. The appointment of Steve Clarke, assistant to Mourinho at Chelsea, is one example. Just a very good on-the-pitch coach. That sort of thing.

"The club strives again to get to a level that suits the club.

"I feel that I am at one of the top clubs in Europe. The goal is still to become champions and win cups, and I will help."

Meanwhile, away from the pitch, Kuyt's wife Gertrude is reportedly expecting their fourth child.
