Southampton v Liverpool: Live matchday blog

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary's in their second Premier League game of the season thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Danny Ings pulled one back for the hosts late on, but the Reds stood firm to claim all three points.

Post-match

Jürgen Klopp's reaction

Jürgen Klopp saluted Liverpool for an 'outstanding job' done following their 2-1 win at Southampton.

Read a summary of the boss' post-match press conference here.

Full-time

Phew!

Liverpool survive a late scare to claim a hugely impressive win after their exploits in Istanbul in midweek.

Superb finishes in either half from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino put the Reds in command, before Danny Ings made a it a nervy last few minutes by pulling one back for Southampton late on.

The visitors held on, though, to make it six points from two Premier League games so far this season.

Full Time

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

90+1

A minimum of four minutes to be added on.

89

Substitution

A third and final sub for Liverpool.

Henderson is on for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

86

Ings misses a good chance for the equaliser, side-footing a cross from the right wide from close range.

83

Goal

Ings pulls one back by blocking Adrian's attempted pass out from the back, with the ball speeding past the 'keeper and into the net.

80

Good save, Adrian!

Matip does well to get to a dangerous cross from the right, but the defender's clearance is goalbound until Adrian tips it wide.

79

Substitution number two for Liverpool.

Origi is on for Salah.

77

Liverpool are enjoying themselves now!

A brilliant one-two between Mane and Robertson ends with the left-back drilling a shot on target, which Gunn turns behind.

75

As the away end belts out the Firmino song, Liverpool almost score a third, with Gunn parrying Mane's firm header wide.

74

Substitution

A first change for the Reds, with Fabinho replacing Milner.

71

Goal

FIRMINO!!!

Get in, Bobby!

Mane does brilliantly to win the ball back high up the pitch following a Southampton throw-in, and the No.10 rolls the ball inside to Firmino.

The Brazilian takes his time, finding the ideal angle from which to shoot. And when he does, he arrows a low strike past Gunn.

Wonderful finish!

67

That's not far off from Ings, the former Liverpool striker who has just come on.

The forward tricks Milner on the edge of the box and curls narrowly over with his left foot.

65

So nearly 2-0!

A lightning break sees Wijnaldum play in Mane down the left.

The goalscorer's cross finds Firmino, who opens out his body and tries to steer a side-footer past Gunn, but his effort goes wide.

63

This is superb from Liverpool.

The game is being played almost exclusively in the Southampton half as the Reds probe for a second, and a prolonged spell of pressure ends with Milner shooting over the bar from Alexander-Arnold's cut-back.

55

Liverpool go close twice!

A clearance from Alexander-Arnold's corner falls to Milner on the edge of the box but his shot goes just wide, before Salah goes through one-on-one and sees his shot saved by Gunn.

52

The Reds have started this half strongly.

Salah tries to slip Firmino in with a slide-rule pass, but Vestergaard clears desperately before the Brazilian can get his shot off.

50

Matip wins a free-kick in a dangerous position after striding forward proactively to nick the ball ahead of Redmond.

Salah hits the wall with his effort from just outside the box.

46

And we're back under way.

No changes for either side at the break.

Half-time

Here's the story of that half in stats...

Half Time

Talk about a good time to score!

The half-time whistle goes pretty much straight away after the restart following that stunning Mane opener.

Liverpool lead 1-0 at the break.

45+1

Goal

MANE!!!

What. A. Finish!

Sadio dips inside from the left and whips an unstoppable shot into the far top corner from 20 yards.

Incredible!

45+1

We're into two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

38

Romeu, having just been booked for a strong tackle on Robertson, swings in a cross from the right and Adams, unmarked, heads over.

A good chance for the hosts goes begging.

33

A first sight of goal for Salah, who gets on the end of Oxlade-Chamberlain's lofted pass from deep and attempts a half-volley from an acute angle.

The Egyptian slices wide, though.

29

The Reds just about manage to scramble the ball away after some pinball in the penalty area.

Then, at the other end, Gunn is alert to gather Wijnaldum's low cross from the left byline.

23

Close!

Firmino can't quite get on the end of a beauty of a cross by Alexander-Arnold and the ball runs out for a goal kick.

23

Milner is back and bandaged up after that clash of heads.

21

What a save!

Adrian denies Yoshida, who headed Ward-Prowse's corner goalwards from close range.

Brilliant from the Spaniard!

18

A first attempt on goal by the home team, as Yoshida just fails to get enough on the ball as he tries to divert Adams' shot goalwards following a corner.

16

Milner is receiving treatment for a cut after clashing heads with Ward-Prowse.

The skipper has run down the tunnel to get patched up, meaning the Reds are down to 10 men temporarily.

13

A gorgeous backheel by Salah affords Oxlade-Chamberlain the chance of a shot on goal, but the No.15 mis-hits his strike and sends it wide from an angle.

6

More pressure from the Reds.

Oxlade-Chamberlain races onto Salah's pass down the right and digs out a fine cross. Mane is waiting to pounce, but Southampton manage to clear.

4

A lovely flick around the corner by Mane enables Milner to stride forward and shoot from 20 yards.

His effort is deflected, though, and goes straight into Gunn's arms.

2

Early attacking intent on display from Liverpool, with Vestergaard forced to hack Firmino's header back across goal clear after Oxlade-Chamberlain had fed the ball wide to Alexander-Arnold.

Boss on Adrian and team selection

Jürgen Klopp has been discussing Adrian's return to fitness and his team selection for today's game at Southampton.

“I’m very pleased about that,” said the boss of his goalkeeper. “We tested it this morning. Yesterday it was already better but still swollen. Now it’s good, so obviously not that serious."

The Reds have made three changes for today's game as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino come back into the XI.

“We had to think a little bit about Wednesday night – but pretty early and then not anymore,” Klopp continued. “And that’s what we decided; the two midfielders with the highest work-rate on Wednesday night [come out of the team]. We have options so let’s do it. That’s what we did, that’s why we changed and that’s it.”

Stat attack

Liverpool could achieve a few records this afternoon...

  • A draw or victory would see Klopp reach 300 league points in fewer games than any other manager in Reds history. Today is his 146th in charge.

  • Liverpool have lost just one of their last 40 Premier League matches and have won the past 10 in a row - the seventh time the club has reached double figures.
  • Their best PL winning streak is 11 games, set between February and April 2014. The longest sequence in Reds history is the 12 successive victories recorded from April to October 1990.

Divock's vow

It's very, very early days in the Premier League but Divock Origi knows one thing: Liverpool's players will give everything to go one better than last season.

"It's going to be a very tough year in the Premier League again, which makes it interesting," the Reds striker commented this week.

"We like a challenge. Mentally, we're a group of fighters, we go out there and play our game. We have a lot of respect for the other teams. It could be a tight race, it's hard for me to tell.

"What I do know is that we're very hungry and we're going to challenge every team and try to win every game possible - and hopefully win something at the end of the year."
