Trent Alexander-Arnold is relishing the prospect of Liverpool coming up against Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday and is aiming to help the team deliver the ideal response to their Napoli disappointment.

The full-back acknowledges the Reds were not at their best during Wednesday's Champions League tie in Italy as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.

But Alexander-Arnold is looking forward to the opportunity to serve up an immediate riposte and produce a display more in keeping with Liverpool's otherwise outstanding early-season form.

"I think the best teams bounce back from a defeat and that's what we'll be looking to do," he told Liverpoolfc.com during a chat at Melwood. "It's important to keep the momentum going. There was a bump in the road on Wednesday but we've got to keep trying to push forward and gather as many points as we can.

"It was a tough one and it was hard to take, but they're the type of lessons you learn from the most. You learn from them more than maybe coming away with a draw. I think maybe it can help us in the long run if we learn from it.

"We know Sunday is going to be difficult against a top team and the current champions, so we'll have a lot of work to do but we're all looking forward to the game.

"You want the games to come thick and fast, especially when you're disappointed by one – you want another one to come straight away.

"I don't think there is a better opportunity than to go and put in a performance against Manchester City, the current champions."

Jürgen Klopp conceded immediately after the defeat at the Stadio San Paolo that Napoli were deserving of their 1-0 win, admitting Liverpool didn't perform to the high levels they're capable of.

So, what's key to putting that right on Sunday in the eyes of Alexander-Arnold?

"When the manager tells us what to do, we go out there and do it," he replies, sharply. "On Wednesday we never quite did that to the extent we wanted and that's why we got beat.

"On Sunday when we need to go out there and perform, then hopefully that's what we'll go out there and do."

Overcoming City will be one of Liverpool's most difficult asks of the campaign.

After their record-shattering march to the title last season, Pep Guardiola's men are level on points with the Reds at the top of the Premier League, but with a better goal difference.

Klopp's side have, however, won each of the last three competitive meetings with the Blues.

"It's a massive game," Alexander-Arnold stated. "You've got to beat the best if you want to be the best.

"One of the toughest tests you'll get all season is Man City, so taking three points from them for yourself can be big going forward. It would put a lot of confidence in us. That's our aim and we know we can do it, it's about doing it on the day.

"It's obviously going to be a tough game, but we've shown in recent games that we have the ability to beat them, to go toe-to-toe with them, and that's what we'll be looking to do again on Sunday – to go at them and try to win the game.

"We're not just taking part, we're not just looking for a point, we're looking to win and get all the points, but you're not going to get much harder opponents than Manchester City."
