West Ham United v Liverpool: Matchday blog

Follow all of the build-up, action and reaction as Liverpool take on West Ham United in the Premier League, with our live updates from the London Stadium.

The manager's verdict

Jürgen Klopp had much to discuss in his post-match press conference at the London Stadium.

He reflected on the win, revealed why Roberto Firmino is angry, why he decided to start Sadio Mane 'the machine' and also why Gini Wijnaldum needed to go boot shopping on Saturday morning.

Full Time

West Ham United 1-4 Liverpool

A Mohamed Salah brace and goals from Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain help the Reds to a big victory in London.

That's a satisfying way to go into the international break!

90

Yellow Card

Lanzini throws the ball away in frustration after being penalised for pulling Wijnaldum and earns himself a yellow card.

Three minutes of added time to be played here.

86

Substitution

Oxlade-Chamberlain and Firmino make way to be replaced by Lovren and Solanke.

They've both played a big part in today's win.

85

Match shot

Get in!

81

Salah is hat-trick hunting and has a decent chance to get a shot off after being picked out by Oxlade-Chamberlain in the box.

Unfortunately, the No.11 can't get enough power on his effort and Hart gets down to save.

76

Substitution

Mane can have a well deserved rest now - the Senegalese is replaced by Milner.

75

Goal

West Ham United 1-4 Liverpool (Salah)

It's four!

Mane weaves through the West Ham midfield before picking out Salah at the back post with a dinked pass.

The Egyptian takes his time to control it before arrowing a low shot beyond the reach of Hart - the travelling fans go wild.

72

Substitution

Chicharito's evening is over, the former Manchester United striker replaced by Diafra Sakho.

67

Another quick counter from the Reds but Mane's left-footed drive is over the bar.

Firmino playing a key role again - he's been excellent so far.

61

Substitution

Mark Noble makes way as Marko Arnautovic takes to the field.

West Ham getting some joy going direct and the big striker will only help in that regard.

56

Goal

West Ham United 1-3 Liverpool (Oxlade-Chamberlain)

Breathless stuff in the capital as, moments after conceding, the Reds march up the other end and net once more.

Oxlade-Chamberlain finishes at the second attempt on this occasion but the goal owes so much to the work of Firmino, whose brilliant turn and drive out of midfield opened West Ham up.

55

Goal

West Ham United 1-2 Liverpool (Lanzini)

The Hammers back in the game.

A crossfield pass into the Liverpool box appears to deceive Gomez and Lanzini pounces, controlling the ball before poking it past Mignolet.

53

West Ham are trying to get down the sides of the Liverpool defence to tee up Andy Carroll.

However, their latest attempt to breach the visitors' backline is repelled by a brilliant Joe Gomez sliding challenge.

47

Yellow Card

Mane is hacked down trying to launch a Liverpool counter and Reid goes straight in the book.

46

West Ham get the game back under way in the capital.

Half-time

Substitution

A change for West Ham at the break.

Edimilson Fernandes makes way for former Reds striker Andy Carroll.

Half-time

Match shot

Joel Matip looks pleased with his second ever Liverpool goal.

Stats, stats, stats

Take a look at the numbers from that first half with our Opta widget below.

Half Time

Lanzini fires one over the bar from distance and that's the last action of the half.

A good opening 45 minutes sees the Reds two up at the Olympic Stadium.

43

Liverpool win the ball back in midfield and Oxlade-Chamberlain immediately sets Salah away.

The Egyptian can't get a shot away in time but wins a corner - unfortunately the Reds waste it.

37

Yellow Card

Mark Noble goes down theatrically just outside the Liverpool box but the referee is having none of it.

The West Ham skipper shown a yellow card for simulation.

32

Match shot

Mohamed Salah celebrates the opening goal.

24

Goal

West Ham 0-2 Liverpool (Matip)

A quickfire double for the visitors!

A fine Joe Hart save prevents Mark Noble from inadvertently turning the ball into his own but the goalkeeper can do nothing about Joel Matip's close-range follow-up.

22

Goal

West Ham 0-1 Liverpool (Salah)

The Reds go ahead and it's thanks to another of those rapid counters from an opposition corner.

Mane bears down on Winston Reid before sliding the ball to Salah, who shows typical composure in slipping the ball past Hart.

18

Match shot

Oxlade-Chamberlain in action.

14

A break in play as Javier Hernandez receives treatment after taking a kick from Joel Matip.

The Hammers fans incensed - probably fairly - that a foul wasn't awarded.

9

A let-off for Liverpool.

An attempted through-ball takes a fortuitous deflection that puts Ayew in one-on-one, but the forward can only direct the ball onto the post in trying to evade Mignolet.

2

An early chance for Firmino as the Brazilian controls a high ball in the box but Hart just about keeps his low effort out.

A decent start for the men in orange.

Kick-Off

Mo Salah gets the game under way!

Pre-match

The view from the opposition

A little snippet from Mark Noble's programme notes reads: "Liverpool are going to bring a different challenge to the one we faced at Crystal Palace. You know they are going to want the ball, for sure, so we'll have to defend really well. [But] we're at home and it'll be under the lights so we need to cause them problems too."

The Hammers conceded an injury-time equaliser to Palace in their last outing and will be keen to make amends today.

Weather

The eagle-eyed weather enthusiasts among you will have noticed we have yet to provide information on the meteorological happenings this evening.

Let us put that right.

The current temperature of 12 degrees is likely to hold firm until kick-off but will probably dip down into single figures by the time the referee blows the final whistle. Coat weather confirmed.

Team news

So, what do we know before kick-off?

There is good news and bad news for Liverpool. Sadio Mane returned to training this week and could be available for "20/25 minutes" according to Jürgen Klopp. But Philippe Coutinho is definitely out.

The Reds will make late calls on the fitness of Dejan Lovren and Georginio Wijnaldum, too.

West Ham, meanwhile, are without several first-team defenders due to injury and Pablo Zabaleta is suspended.

Keep an eye out for confirmed starting line-ups at around 4.30pm GMT.
