Jürgen Klopp considered Philippe Coutinho's performance in the Merseyside derby a demonstration of his 'world-class credentials'.

The No.10 was hugely influential in Liverpool claiming a 3-1 victory over neighbours Everton on Saturday, restoring their lead at a crucial time in the first half and later setting up Divock Origi to seal the result.

His display – and that of compatriot Roberto Firmino, too – merited additional praise given the exertions on international duty for Brazil in the preceding days.

With the injured Sadio Mane set to miss out on tonight’s clash with Bournemouth, the manager sees this game and those remaining in the season as more chances for the likes of Coutinho to take control.

“Sadio’s absence provides an opportunity for others to step up and take the chance presented,” Klopp writes in official matchday programme ‘This is Anfield’.

“There were great examples of this on Saturday – some outstanding performances.

“Philippe demonstrated his credentials as a player worthy of ‘world-class’ status. And I’m not referring to the goal, which was a moment of beauty.

“I mean his all-round performance, sacrificing himself for the team – working as hard defensively as he did offensively. OK, so the goal was nice, but as a coach and manager it’s the entire performance you judge and this was a player fighting and battling for his team.

“For him and Roberto I can only say how impressive this was when you factor in the week previous, with their travelling and involvement for the national team. Attitude to mirror their ability – good combination.”
