Liverpool will be determined to take the first step towards a trophy when they host Carlisle United in the Capital One Cup, insists Simon Mignolet.

Tuesday night’s third round draw handed the Reds a meeting with the League Two side, who will visit Anfield in the week commencing September 21.

A home fixture was well received by the goalkeeper, as was the pairing of several Barclays Premier League rivals against one another.

Mignolet told Liverpoolfc.com: “You’re always happy when you’ve got a home game. I think that’s the best thing.

“When I saw the other Premier League teams that were drawn against each other, that’s always good. We’re happy with that and now we want to progress into the next round.”

Brendan Rodgers’ charges were thwarted at the penultimate hurdle in both domestic cup competitions last season, losing to Chelsea and Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the League Cup and FA Cup respectively.

But those disappointments have merely increased the desire within the squad to bring silverware back to Anfield.

“That comes with the tradition of the club,” added the Belgian. “I’ve said it from the start – the ambition here is to try to win every competition we start in.

“That only comes by winning the individual games step by step, so we’ll have to get through the third round. The first job in hand is Carlisle at home.”
