Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori suffered disappointment in the final of the European U21 Championship on Tuesday evening, as his Portugal side lost out to Sweden on penalties.

The 22-year-old started the showpiece fixture of this summer's tournament in the Czech Republic, playing 120 minutes as both teams failed to find a breakthrough.

That the game ended 0-0 meant that Ilori and his colleagues had conceded just one goal in five games throughout the competition.

But, unfortunately, they were unable to clinch the trophy when the match went to spot-kicks.

Portugal were initially handed a reprieve in the shootout after Ricardo Esgaio's effort was saved, as Sweden's Abdul Khalili also missed immediately after to keep things level.

However, Patrik Carlgren's stop from William Carvalho ensured the Swedes took the trophy courtesy of a 4-3 victory.
