Emre Can's hopes of achieving glory at the U21 European Championship were dashed as Germany were thrashed 5-0 by Portugal in Olomouc on Saturday evening.

Two teams with serious intentions of winning the prestigious trophy met at Ander Stadium in the semi-finals, and Can played the full game.

But it all went wrong for the Liverpool No.23 and his country.

Portugal were three goals to the good by the half-time interval and added two more in the second half to seal a resounding result.

Can, who made 40 appearances in his debut Anfield season, had scored once and provided an assist during the group stages.
