A local competition winner got to experience what life is really like as a Barclays Premier League footballer last week after claiming a special prize via Facebook.

Dave Wynne-Jones, from Warrington, scooped the opportunity for him and his friend, Matt Jones, to play for their favourite team as part of a giveaway organised by Vauxhall, the Reds' official car sponsor.

The prize involved the 21-year-old meeting fellow competition winners at Anfield and travelling to the Academy on the first-team coach - where they were met by legends John Aldridge and David Fairclough.

They then went head-to-head in a managerial battle, with the former Liverpool players selecting their teams for a match between the fans which Aldridge's side won 10-3.

Dave said: "It has been the most unforgettable day of my life. We got to travel on the team coach and were given brand new, personalised kits to play in and keep.

"I think the biggest cheer of the day came when the managers were announced. We couldn't believe Aldridge and Fairclough were the managers! It just topped off a phenomenal experience. I won't forget this for a very long time."

Aldridge added: "The players have been fantastic and we've all had a magnificent day thanks to Vauxhall. The lads were great and I'm sure they'll tell their grandkids about this one day."

The players, who were from across the United Kingdom, had taken part in a national competition run by Vauxhall on their Liverpool FC Facebook page.

Vauxhall sponsorship marketing manager Cheryl Stibbs commented: "We were overwhelmed with the number of entries to our Liverpool FC pitch experience competition, which is a testament to the passion of the fans.

"We understand the historic and symbolic importance of wearing the Liverpool shirt, and to be able to offer fans a chance to play for their team is something we are extremely proud of."
