Xabi Alonso reflected on the incredible reception he received on his return to Anfield on Sunday and admitted: 'It felt like I'd come back home.'

The Spaniard made his first appearance in front of the Kop since leaving the Reds in the summer of 2009 in the LFC All-Star charity match.

Alonso's popularity amongst supporters hasn't wavered in the slightest - and his name was one of the most vociferously sung by the sold-out crowd.

Afterwards, the 33-year-old acknowledged his emotions at returning 'home', explaining how it felt like he'd never been away.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "Wow. I was really looking forward to this game. It was really special and really emotional.

"When I left, I didn't have the chance to say a proper goodbye. Today was a kind of 'hello' to everyone - it was great to be back home. It was a great feeling.

"It brought all the memories back. It felt like I hadn't left for a long time. I was feeling at home. It's always special to be back at Anfield, to be in front of the crowd. It was a great reception and I am really happy."

The game itself was an entertaining affair as a Steven Gerrard XI fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Jamie Carragher's XI.

It was Gerrard himself who struck the goals for his team - both coming from the penalty spot, one of which was conceded by Carragher when he hauled down Luis Suarez in the box.

"Some things don't change - Stevie scoring, Carra giving away penalties! Life goes on the same way," joked Alonso.

"I took it for granted that Carra would be fully committed and fully determined to win the game. It was great fun."

Alonso added: "Everything turned out perfectly. It was great to be back here and great to help the charities and it was nice to see a lot of people again."
