Brendan Rodgers pledged that Liverpool will approach the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final against Chelsea without fear after outplaying the league leaders in the first contest.

The Reds were relentless in pressing the Londoners on Tuesday, bustling them out of possession at every opportunity, pouring towards the Kop and peppering the goal of Thibaut Courtois.

That Rodgers' side only registered once was perhaps the surprise of the night, with Steven Gerrard denied by the woodwork in the second half and the Chelsea stopper near impenetrable.

When the clash had concluded, Rodgers insisted his belief in Liverpool's potential to complete the job at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday was reinforced by the level of performance.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: "If you look at our last three [league] games away from home, we haven't conceded a goal and won the games. So we go into the match with big confidence.

"Of course it will be a difficult game, but it's a semi-final, second leg and it's all to play for. You saw in the game the confidence in possession and positioning, young players with no fear.

"If we could have just managed to finish one or two of the opportunities, the scoreline would have been different. We'll have no fear - we'll look forward to it.

"It means the second leg is very wide open and I think there will be more spaces for us to go and create and hopefully score more goals.

"It was a good away performance by them; they stayed compact, stayed behind the ball and looked to play on the counter-attack.

"We looked to dominate the game and create chances - that's all you ask the team to do - then without the ball be really aggressive and defend. We did that very well against a top side."
