Brendan Rodgers knows his Liverpool side face a tough task when Arsenal visit Anfield in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday, but insists the Reds should focus on their own qualities.

The home side will attempt to close the gap to their rivals in the current standings to two points by successfully building on a 3-1 Capital One Cup victory at Bournemouth in midweek.

In previewing the encounter with a press conference today, the manager acknowledged the threat posed by Arsene Wenger's outfit, particularly after their positive result last weekend.

But Rodgers equally backed his team to prepare for the meeting with a strong mentality, with an additional confidence boost available if a win can be achieved in L4.

"It would continue our spirit and focus," the Northern Irishman responded to reporters at Melwood when asked what three points would mean for the Reds this weekend.

"They are a top side and have got outstanding players. For us, it would be good for confidence, but it will be a difficult game.

"At home last week they won 4-1 and played really well against Newcastle. But we'll be looking to focus on our game and the focus will be on ourselves."

Another subject raised was Raheem Sterling's position and whether Rodgers would opt to once more field the 20-year-old in a central attacking role following his brace on Wednesday.

The boss said: "He has been fantastic wherever he has played this season. He was outstanding the other night and we'll see what is in the best interests of the team."
