Joe Allen is eager to draw confidence from a 3-0 win at Manchester United last season when Liverpool seek to recover from their Champions League elimination at the hands of FC Basel.

Despite a sublime Steven Gerrard free-kick in the 81st minute of the final Group B clash, Allen and co were unable to summon a crucial winner against the Swiss and consequently the Reds bowed out of the competition.

Attentions now turn to a Barclays Premier League clash which never fails to set the pulse racing - a trip to Old Trafford to face Louis Van Gaal's United, in what is likely to be yet another fiery instalment of the famous old fixture.

In March, Liverpool extended a winning run in the league to six matches when they turned over United, then under the stewardship of David Moyes, with Steven Gerrard registering two penalties and Luis Suarez adding a third goal.

Allen is calling for an immediate response to exiting Europe's premier club competition in the week - and he wants nothing more than to emulate the team's exploits of 2013-14 when Brendan Rodgers' side face United at the weekend.

"We had a fantastic result there last season, so we'll be looking to draw some confidence and inspiration from that performance and we'll go there and try to get the win," the Wales international told Liverpoolfc.com.

"They are great games to play in between two clubs who are massive globally and there's a great rivalry between the clubs. These matches are great to be a part of.

"Last season it was a great feeling to go to Old Trafford and get the three points and all of the players want that feeling again.

"When you are a kid, these are the kind of games you can't wait to watch and these are the games that inspire all of the players in the dressing room as it's great to be involved in. So we can't wait for it. Both sets of fans can't wait for the kick-off either."
