Raheem Sterling's first experience of a Merseyside derby on home turf couldn't have gone much better – and the winger is eager to help Liverpool conjure up something similar when Everton visit Anfield on Saturday.

Sterling was named in the starting XI for the Reds as they recorded a comprehensive 4-0 victory over their neighbours in front of the Kop back in January.

Now, as Everton prepare to make the journey across Stanley Park once more, the 19-year-old is targeting a comparable performance and result as Liverpool aim to hit form in the Barclays Premier League.

"It was a great game - the scoreline blew everyone away," Sterling told Liverpoolfc.com. "That's the quality we have in the team. Hopefully we can go out and show people that we've got the same mentality we did when we played them last year at Anfield and win the game.

"I don't think it'll need any firing up, every derby speaks for itself - they're always cracking ones. This one will be no different and hopefully we can come away with the three points at the end of the game."

Sterling has been in effervescent form for Liverpool so far this season, leading to him being named as the club's Standard Chartered Player of the Month for August earlier this week.

He was lively once again, playing the entire 120 minutes in the Reds' Capital One Cup penalty shootout victory over Middlesbrough on Tuesday - though it was he who conceded possession which led to Kolo Toure bringing down Patrick Bamford in the box to allow him to net a dramatic equaliser from the spot.

"It was one of the most nightmarish 10 minutes I've had in a long while, but it's part of a learning curve," Sterling reflected. "The most important thing is that the team won.

"That is what your teammates are for - to help you get out of bad situations. That's what they did against Middlesbrough, so congratulations to the whole team.

"To get silverware back at Anfield is one of the main objectives this season, as well as doing well in the league. Hopefully we can win a trophy this season."

Meanwhile, Sterling had words of praise for fellow Academy graduates Jordan Rossiter and Jordan Williams, who made their first-team debuts against Middlesbrough.

Rossiter was handed a starting berth by Brendan Rodgers and duly scored after 10 minutes, while Williams entered the action as a late substitute in normal time and successfully converted in the penalty shootout.

"Jordan [Rossiter] did really well and got the first goal," said Sterling. "I thought his passing was really good - I didn't see him give a bad pass in the whole time he was on the pitch.

"There was Jordan Williams as well, so it's a really good time for the Academy bringing players through."
