One man who played his part in Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph is hoping that the Reds can impress on their return to the competition following Thursday's group stage draw.

Proceedings in Monaco paired Brendan Rodgers' team with reigning champions Real Madrid, the Swiss outfit FC Basel and Bulgarian title-holders Ludogorets Razgrad.

Former striker Neil Mellor described the outcome for Liverpool as 'fantastic' and believes they have every chance of progressing into the knockout rounds.

"To be back in the competition and taking on the current champions is fantastic," he said.

"It's all about qualification. It's great to be back but, looking at the draw, there's a strong chance for Liverpool to progress beyond the group stage and so I think Brendan will be encouraged.

"I think Liverpool fans will be delighted too, looking forward to some exciting away trips again in Europe."
