Rickie Lambert always knew he would be kicking off his Liverpool career against Southampton, an opening fixture he described as 'inevitable' following his move from the south coast back to Merseyside this summer.

The Reds get their Barclays Premier League campaign underway on Sunday afternoon at Anfield against the Saints, with Lambert and Dejan Lovren set to make their competitive debuts against their former club.

And Lambert admits he always had a feeling Liverpool would be pitted against his ex-employers on the opening day.

"I was at home waiting for the fixtures to come through and I just laughed. It was always going to be and I said before they came out it would be Southampton," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I thought it was going to be at St. Mary's - that's not the case, but it was inevitable that it would be the game."

You can see what else Lambert had to say on his time at the club so far, the excitement of playing European football this season and his ambitions to lift silverware by the end of the campaign in our free video below.
