There was disappointment for Mamadou Sakho as France were knocked out of the World Cup as Germany progressed to the semi-finals after a 1-0 win on Friday evening.

Liverpool's No.17 played for 71 minutes before leaving the field in a game that could have gone either way at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

The only goal came after 12 minutes when defender Mats Hummels rose majestically to plant a header past Hugo Lloris after a superb free-kick delivery from Toni Kroos.

Germany stopper Manuel Neuer then showed why he is so highly rated with a magnificent save to deny Mathieu Valbuena and then the follow up effort from Karim Benzema was blocked.

Sakho then sent a header over the top and France continued to press in the second half but they just couldn't find the elusive equaliser.

Lloris did his best for France with a string of excellent saves to keep out Germany counter attacks, and at the other end with virtually the last kick of the game Benzema saw his fierce effort beaten away by Neuer.
