After injury had cruelly robbed him of his chance four years earlier, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard featured at his first World Cup in 2006 and wasted little time in making a big impression.

Weeks after inspirationally guiding his club to FA Cup glory, the midfielder was a central figure as the Three Lions reached the quarter-finals at the tournament in Germany.

Gerrard had three Anfield colleagues alongside him in the squad, there were three Reds representatives in the Spanish group and Harry Kewell was a pivotal player behind Australia's run.

The final would pit two European heavyweights against one another, with France taking on Italy, although the match is remembered more for a stunning Zinedine Zidane moment.
