Liverpool Ladies have signed Danish U23 international defender Nina Pedersen, subject to international clearance.

The Women's Super League champions have secured the signature of the centre-back from the California Golden Bears in Berkeley, University of California.

Pedersen is a cultured central defender who has played college football in the United States for the last four years, having previously played at Texas University.

The 22-year-old is a current Denmark U23 international having previously represented her native country at U17 and U19 level.

"I am thrilled to be able to join Liverpool and cannot wait to get started," Pedersen said.

"We are the defending champions and go into the second half of the WSL season unbeaten as we look to retain the league title.

"I have always had the ambition to play in England so to be able to sign for the defending champions was obviously a massive opportunity for me that I could not turn down.

"The team have got an excellent defensive record so far this season and hopefully I can help to improve that even more."

Manager Matt Beard has moved to strengthen his squad following an unbeaten start to the 2014 WSL campaign for the Reds.

The Ladies won their opening game against Manchester City, which was followed by three successive draws against Chelsea, Notts County and Birmingham City.

Beard commented: "This is a really exciting signing for Liverpool Ladies as she is a highly-rated defender who is comfortable on the ball, so will adapt to our style of play effortlessly.

"I am delighted to have been able to have acquired Nina as she will give us more options in defence and is also able to play in midfield. Her versatility will be crucial as we look to retain our WSL title."
