As we continue to reminisce on an incredible 1983-84 season, a rock at the heart of the team's defence has revealed how a rallying call from captain Graeme Souness inspired the Reds to a treble triumph.

Mark Lawrenson missed just one of 66 games during that unforgettable campaign as he and Alan Hansen kept opposition attacks at bay throughout the land and across the continent.

The Republic of Ireland international recalls how Joe Fagan took over the hottest seat in football from the iconic Bob Paisley at the start of the season.

He also reflects on how the players helped a man they had huge respect for clinch three trophies in his first season in charge at the helm.

"I remember when Joe took over, the newspapers wrote him off straight away and said he could never follow Bob because of what Bob had done," Lawrenson told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I remember the captain, Souness, called us all together and said, 'listen, everybody is writing Joe off. We have to help him and play for him!' Everyone in the dressing room was of the same opinion as Graeme and we did it for him.

"It was fantastic for him to win three trophies in one season and you always felt with Joe that he trusted you.

"We started slowly. The season took care of itself and once you got to the business end, everybody was just blinkered about what we wanted to do. We all knew each other and it was fantastic.

"It's funny looking back at that season, which was 30 years ago - it makes me feel older than I actually am! I was with Hansen the other day and we were saying we couldn't believe it was 30 years ago, as it only feels like it was three or four years ago."

Another turning point from the same season came following a 2-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup fourth round.

It was the second season in succession that the Seagulls had knocked the mighty Reds out of the competition, and Lawrenson recalls how Fagan dealt with the blow.

He added: "We got beat by Brighton in the FA Cup and Souness injured his hamstring on a terrible pitch. We were awful on the day.

"After the game we went back to dressing room expecting a right telling off. Not a word was said apart from, 'get in the shower and get on the coach'.

"Normally after an away game on the bus the beer would come up from the hold, but it didn't this time and we thought we were in serious trouble.

"We went back via London and I'll never forget stopping at a hotel in Marylebone. Joe took us off the bus and into the hotel bar and brought us all a drink. He looked at us all and said, 'promise me that doesn't happen again!' And, of course, it didn't as we won the treble."
