Shanks' playing fields given fresh sign
A brand-new Bill Shankly sign has been installed at the playing fields in West Derby that carry the great man's name.
The family of the legendary Reds manager helped unveil the colourful new addition, which was created to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth in September last year.
The sign has been funded by Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council and features one of Shankly's famous quotes: "No player is asked to do more than another. Everyone shares the load."
Shankly's grand-daughter, Karen Gill, who is the Honorary President of the Liverpool FC Supporters' Committee, said: "I am extremely proud to present this sign in my grandfather's honour today and I would like to thank everyone at the club and Liverpool City Council who have made it happen.
"I know that my grandfather would have been delighted with this because his great passion in life was football and providing opportunities for youngsters to play."
Liverpool City Council's assistant cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Lana Orr, added: "Bill Shankly was one of the most colourful figures in the history of football.
"He was a much-loved character, who continues to inspire youngsters today, as he is remembered with affection for his unwavering commitment to the team and determination to bring out the best in all his players.
"I'm delighted to have been part of this special sign unveiling, and hope that the sight of his name will spur the next generation to achieve their goals, both on and off the pitch."
Chris Carline, who as well as being a City Council neighbourhood team leader for the area, is also Bill's grandson, stated: "It was a member of my team, Tracey Murphy, who came up with the idea to get a new sign installed.
"I thought it was a fantastic suggestion, both in terms of enhancement of the local area and as a tribute to my granddad. I'm hugely proud of it."
