'Why we'll look for a repeat of 2012-13'
Mike Marsh is hoping Liverpool's fortunes follow a similar path to last season throughout the second half of the current campaign.
Brendan Rodgers' first year in charge at Anfield embarked on an upwards trajectory from January, with a steady upturn in results and performances.
Teams like Norwich City, Newcastle United and Fulham felt the full force of an outfit refreshed by the influence of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.
Liverpool won nine out of 18 Premier League matches, compared to seven before Christmas, and were unlucky to be held on the road against Manchester City and Arsenal.
Marsh believes a similar vein of form this time around would keep the Reds near the top of the table, and within touching distance of where they want to be come May.
"I think we will improve," he told Liverpoolfc.com. "I think we're improving in every area, defensively and offensively.
"We're working hard every day and if last season is anything to go by, then in this second half of the season we'll come on strong.
"It's important that you keep on picking up results and keep as close to the top four and to the top of the table as possible. You don't want to fall too far behind because it's difficult to make such a big gap up. We're aiming to win every game and stay in there.
"It's a boost when you look at the table, see the TV or you read the newspaper and Liverpool are on top or up around the top of the table. So it's important we try and stay around there. Psychologically, it's a big boost for the squad."
Assistant manager Colin Pascoe last week confirmed that the Reds will look to welcome a host of injured stars back into the side throughout January.
Steven Gerrard was the first to return for the clashes against Hull City and Oldham Athletic at Anfield while Joe Allen and Daniel Sturridge are expected to follow throughout the month.
Marsh admits that injuries have hampered preparations somewhat, with Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Agger also both succumbing to problems in recent weeks. However, he insists the players who have stepped in have proved exemplary replacements.
"It's been difficult," said Marsh. "We've lost a number of players to injury - some minor, some more serious. But the players who have come in have done really well and we've managed to win the last two games.
"You always want your best players available. It's been unfortunate that one or two have missed games over the Christmas period and the sooner we get them back the better because they'll make us a better side."
