Colin Pascoe has explained how Liverpool's transfer strategy is in operation throughout the calendar year and why plans will not be altered due to the injuries currently afflicting the Reds' squad.

The transfer window for January opened on Wednesday as Brendan Rodgers' side welcomed back captain Steven Gerrard and returned to the Barclays Premier League top four by beating Hull City 2-0.

Despite the skipper's timely comeback from a hamstring issue, Joe Allen, Jose Enrique, Jon Flanagan, Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge are among those remaining on the sidelines at Melwood.

The situation will have no bearing on Rodgers' ambitions to strengthen his options this month, according to Pascoe, who pledged that hard work is underway to identify potential recruits.

"The scouts and everyone behind the scenes are looking at players, which players to bring into Liverpool Football Club," the assistant manager told reporters on Friday.

"It's always ongoing, not just in January or in the summer. It's always ongoing. We'll be looking at different players and I'm sure there are targets, if we want or need them, to bring in.

"You get your targets, whatever you want, you go out and assess certain things - nothing changes.

"At any club, you will get injuries. Unfortunately for us, we had one or two close together. But all the targets we are looking for will still remain the same."

The Welshman was also asked at the club's pre-Oldham Athletic press conference about newspaper speculation that winger Raheem Sterling could be allowed to leave on loan during January.

Pascoe quickly dismissed the notion: "We just laughed at that really. Raheem has been brilliant this season - he won't be going anywhere."
