Mamadou Sakho insists Liverpool will not pay too much attention to the fact that they can go top of the Barclays Premier League with a victory over Cardiff City today.

Sakho will be looking to make a third consecutive start at the heart of the Reds' defence when they lock horns with the Bluebirds at Anfield.

A win would see Brendan Rodgers' side move ahead of Arsenal and occupy top spot in the table for two days at least.

Should the Gunners fail to win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, Liverpool will remain at the league's summit over Christmas.

However, Sakho argues it's too early to get carried away with league positions - and he's calling for focus ahead of the clash against the newly-promoted outfit.

"Going to top of the table can only be a positive thing, but the league title has not been decided just yet, and it won't be decided this weekend either," the Frenchman told Liverpoolfc.com.

"We need to concentrate on each game and pick up as many points as possible along the way. It would be great to beat Cardiff, but after that I always say that you look at the points tally at the end of the season.

"For now we need to concentrate on the Cardiff game and try and ensure those three points. It's a game we really want to win and take all three points prior to taking on Chelsea and City."

Liverpool will be keen to build on an impressive Anfield record - which has seen them fire 20 goals in their last five matches in front of the Kop - when they face Malky Mackay's side this afternoon.

Their fantastic run in L4 began with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace back in early October, after which the Reds put four past both West Bromwich Albion and Fulham before a five-star display against Norwich City.

In the last game on home turf, Sakho added his name to the scoresheet as West Ham United were swept aside with a 4-1 win, and the centre-back is eager for more of the same against Cardiff.

"In football, every team has the odd dip in form and let's hope that doesn't apply to us right now," said the 23-year-old. "If we do hit a bad patch throughout the rest of the season, let's hope it's only for a very short time.

"Right now the team is really well focused and everyone is working really well in training. There's some really good competition for places and that is bringing the best out of the players.

"When a player gets in the side he's playing his heart out for the side, for the group, and it's just the same when anyone comes on as substitute. So from now on, if we can hold on to this winning mentality, the team can only head upwards."
